A Day in the Life

Written by an Avalon Sophomore

8:00 am

The doors open to students.
I like to arrive early so I can hang out with friends or catch up on homework.

9:00 am

I head to my advisory for check-in. For the next twenty minutes we will answer a (typically original and amusing) check-in question as well as hear important community announcements. Today’s check-in: “What is your preferred mythical method of transportation?”  (I choose Pegasus)

9:20 am

Time for the first seminar period of the day. I don’t have a seminar right now, so I finish my Geometry homework and talk to my advisor about my project plans for the week.

10:20 am

I have Spanish 2 with Anni for second seminar. “Voy a la clase de espanol.”

11:20 am

For third seminar I have Geometry.

12:20 pm

Lunch time! Students who arrive on time have open lunch, and everyone else eats in the cafe or cafeteria.

1:00 pm

One o’clock to one thirty is Reading Time. Students sit around quietly reading or writing journals. Today I’m reading a book my friend lent me called Nurture Shock.

1:30 pm

During fourth seminar I have my shift in the library. I spend the hour shelving books and weeding out four extra copies of the fifth Harry Potter book.

2:30 pm

Time for the last seminar period of the day. I stay in my advisory and begin editing my reflection for my “Healthy Choices” project.

3:30 pm

Check-out time. Students report back to their advisories to clean up, log their hours and rush through a check-out question.

3:40 pm

School is over. Some students stay until five o’clock to do project work, participate in theater or help out around the school. I begin writing a thesis paper for my American Studies seminar on the Civil War.

5:00 pm

Advisors ask me to leave.  I take the city bus home to finish my Geometry homework for tomorrow.

Advisor’s note: This is just an example of one day.  Seminars typically meet either Tuesday and Thursday or Monday, Wednesday and Friday.  This student may spend much of tomorrow in “advisory” working independently on her project work or meeting with advisors to plan new projects.
