Student Wins National Merit Scholarship!

We are proud to announce that Matt Lesicko has been awarded a Merit Scholarship to Macalester College.  We are excited t hat Matt is going to stay in the neighborhood next year as a Mac student- hopefully that means we will still be able to access his unlimited tech expertise!  Congratulations and good luck Matt!

Avalon Student Wins National Award!

Holly Marsh recently returned from Washington D.C. where she was honored for the 2009 National George B. Hartzog Youth Volunteer Award. The National Park Service chooses just five of their 175,000 volunteers to honor with this award. Holly was chosen because of her extreme dedication- she volunteered for over 270 hours for the National Park Service last year. Not only is she an incredible public servant, but she is also an outstanding student. Her interest with the National Park Service began with an Avalon trip to the park headquarters in the Minnesota Science Museum. We like to think that project based learning contributed to her achievement. :)
You can read the article about Holly at this link.

Senior Presentation Season is Here!

At Avalon, the seniors are required to undertake a 300 hour ’senior project’ in order to graduate.  These projects are launched in the fall with a 3 day senior retreat where the students work together to brainstorm ideas and to start to flesh out their project proposals.  By the end of October, all seniors have developed a committee of people to help them as they work their way through their projects and plan their presentations.  These committees include parents/guardians, two Avalon advisors, an Avalon junior, and a community expert in the field that they are studying.  The committee comes together to listen to the senior’s proposal, to give feedback and advice, and to cheer the student on his or her way.  The student checks in with this committee over the course of the year, and then works more closely with them in the early spring to plan out the presentations.  In general, the seniors are nervous about these projects and presentations in the fall, wondering how they will ever be able to find enough information to give a 30 minute presentation.  And then in the spring, most seniors are wondering how they will ever edit their presentation to be ONLY 30 minutes!  They have learned so much and are eager to share it.  The spring senior presentation season is here.  The topics for each event are listed on our calendar.  Author statements from each senior are available at this link.  I strongly suggest that if you see a topic that excites you, please come in to check out one of these presentation events!

Google honors top math students!

Google recently donated 5 free laptops to Avalon.  The stipulation was that they were to go to our math teacher and our top two male and female math students.  They arrived last week and at the Monday morning meeting we were able to present them to the students.  Congratulations to Matt, Jonas, Encendre, and Eileen!  They walked away from the meeting with a fabulous new laptop, complete with a commuter backpack and other fun accessories.

Thanks to Google for this opportunity to honor four hard working students!
