Avalon's Assessments

The following list includes information on each major assessment Avalon School employs, the dates when they occur, the average time required to complete them, and the justification for their use.  For any questions regarding Avalon's use of assessments, please contact Tim Quealy (Tim@avalonschool.org).

Hope Survey - Fall (9/19 - 9/23) and Spring (5/22 - 5/26):  Hope Survey is mandated as one of our Authorizer (NEO) goals and takes approximately 15 minutes to complete.  The Hope Survey is used to measure non-academic outcomes such as student self-efficacy, optimism, and problem solving.  All new students take the Hope Survey in the fall, while all students take the survey in the spring.

NWEA MAP Math and Reading - Fall (9/26 to 9/30) and Spring (5/2 to 5/5): NWEA MAP test is used to measure progress from fall to spring.  It is used with all students grades 6 through 10.  Students complete both a math and reading test, and each takes appoximately 35 minutes.  The NWEA MAP scores are used as part of an authorizer (NEO) goal.

Accuplacer Math and Reading Placement - Fall (10/3 to 10/7): The Accuplacer is used with all 11th and 12th graders as a means to measure college-readiness.  It is the same test students entering the MNSCU system will use to determine initial course placement.  We find it is a useful tool to help students begin to visualize college and make future goals.  Students complete both the math and reading test, and each takes appoximately 30 minutes.

PSAT - Fall (10/19/16): The PSAT is given to all 11th grade students in the fall.  It is used as a measure of college-readiness and we report our scores in our Annual Report.  The PSAT has three sections (Reading, Writing and Language, and Math) and takes 2 hours and 35 minutes to complete.

ACT plus Writing Test - Spring (4/19):  It is required for Avalon to offer the ACT to all 11th grade students by the state of Minnesota.  The test has five sections (English, Math, Reading, Science, and Writing) and takes 3 hours and 35 minutes.

MCA Tests - Spring: The MCA tests are required by the state of Minnesota.  Approximate times are in parentheses.

4/11/17 - 4/12/17 - MCA Math for grades 6, 7, 8 (1.5-2.5 hours)
4/13/17 - 4/14/17 - MCA Reading for grades 6, 7, 8 (2.5-3.5 hours)
4/17/17 - 4/18/17 - MCA Science for grade 8 (1.75 hours)
4/20/17 - 4/21/17 - MCA Reading Test for 10th Grade (2-3hours)
